My Hair Routine for Dreadlocks
I wash my hair once a week. I have been using Dr. Bronner's liquid peppermint soap for years now but as I have recently learned that it has a little wax in it I may stop using it to wash my locks. You are not supposed to put anything with petroleum in your locks, really in your hair, period. I had been using it so long I never even thought about it, I just assumed it was ok. I have been using Suave Apple scent shampoo until I find a natural hair shampoo that I like.
I use Almond oil to moisturize my hair after washing it. While my hair is still wet I take a teaspoon of it, rub it between my palms, and then work my hands through my locks from close to the root to the ends. I don't put any oil directly on my scalp, this causes root blockage and build-up, definite no-no. I also use Olive oil if I am out of Almond oil, this is also good for natural hair.
I try to let my locks air dry, but as my hair is very thick and very long this takes several hours. In the summer this is ok, but if it is cold as it often is here in Northeast Ohio I'll use a hair dryer to speed up the process. I am paranoid about going outside with a wet head in the winter, I get cold enough as it it is without getting popsicle head.
