What About Bugs in Compost?

My yard is full of ants and they were all in my garden. I had no problems but I have heard other gardeners complain that ants affect their harvest. My compost didn't have ants in it but it had worms and grubs and snails and pill bugs. Since those creatures live in the dirt anyway (as do ants) I don't see how they could not be useful in the compost which was going in the dirt (garden). If you want to minimize ants from getting into your compost, start a new batch and keep it covered with a tight lid at all times.

Winter Compost December 2007

I mashed about in the back yard & woods, then decided to turn the big compost pile. Added stuff from to small bins. Inner core steaming! Wow!

I didn't turn my compost at all last winter and it froze. I'm gonna keep turning this winter to have garden compost early spring :)

Really something to see what looks like a pile of snow, is actually food & leaf waste breaking down to essential elements, high nutrient dirt.

Big Bird cheered me on, yay!

We finally got all the tomato plants pulled!! The kids were a huge help with pulling the stakes, picking the tomatoes, digging trenches, and laying in the compost. I told them it would only take 30 minutes but it ended up taking a whole hour, but they were good sports about it. Surprisingly, my daughter got very into it. She likes to help with the garden at the beginning, when it's just dealing with seeds, but once everything is growing she doesn't like to go in the garden because of bug grossness like this. So I told her that all I'd like her to do was pick off any tomatoes left on the plants after her brothers and I pulled them. There were still a lot of tomatoes, most of them unripe. She did that and then helped with laying in the compost. The boys dragged all the tomato plants back to my new compost heap and helped dig trenches and lay it in. We had a lot of fun! Good times.
