Why Cutting Out Salt Helps You Lose Weight

A friend of mine suggested that for my last 10 pounds I try to cut out salt completely from my diet. I have drastically lowered my salt intake this year and I am convinced it does help, but it seems to me to eat a no-salt diet would be too much work. Initially not adding salt to my food was hard, but now it's easy enough to pass up the salt. Why does it work? Well salt causes your body to retain water, which shows up on the scale as excess weight. So when you reduce your salt intake, you quickly lose a lot of water weight. This is a confidence boost that can help you in the first few weeks to stay the course and start losing real fat.

Today’s Goals:
Walk 12,000 steps
Drink 120 oz water
One serving meals, seconds declined
No salt added to food
It's Halloween so I'm allowing candy for snacks, raw fruit for dessert
Brush & floss after every meal
Start: 210 pounds
Today’s weigh-in: 140 pounds
Goal: 130 pounds

Roots of Overeating

I needed to figure out why I had a problem with overeating. At the root of it I ate too much because my dad survived the depression as a child and ever since had a horror of not having enough to eat. He always overfed us and encouraged us to have seconds. He would do things like put water in the ketchup bottle to get the last little bit and eat fruit like apples completely, core and all. He would get very upset if he saw food in the garbage.

Because we were not fat children (he also encouraged us to run around and play, limited our tv time) I had no idea that we were overeating or developing bad eating habits until I became an adult and overweight after my 3rd child. I had no idea about portion sizes or anything! I thought a full dinner plate of rice was one portion of rice. I thought a serving of apples meant 3 or 4 apples at one time, I kid you not. I still have a problem with throwing away food. What helps me with this is to not prepare more food than we can eat at any one meal and if we have leftovers to immediately store them for lunch the next day rather than eat them right then. I still have trouble knowing when I am full, I always thought being full meant being stuffed to bursting, because that was how I ate as a child.

How to Dry Brush Your Body

Standing in bathtub (to catch the falling skin), brush the dry skin all over your body, starting with the fingertips and arms and working inward toward the torso. Next, brush your legs and move upward toward the torso. Some areas may be more sensitive than others, for instance the breasts and neck, yet the treatment is quite good for them as well. The more often you do this treatment, the less sensitive your skin will become. Once or twice a day is recommended.

On the Home Stretch

Taking full-body pics like before this weekend but here's a quick snap. Major difference from last round of pics is in my legs though. I'm 10 pounds from my goal, wooooooot! I am sure I will knock that off by the end of October. Mainly I've been walking, doing yoga, and chair exercises when I'm chained to my desk. I'm going to get back into the gym once my schedule clears up a bit.

I Need to Measure My Waist

It’s been a while since I checked my measurements so i wanted to do it this morning. I can’t find my tape measure! Oh well, I definitely can see and feel a difference. In addition to the crunches I’ve been making an effort to maintain good posture throughout the day. Just by not slumping I’m pulling my abdominal muscles in, which is awesome.

Now off to find that tape measure, LOL.

Back to Basics

As I am now almost a mere ten pounds from my goal but struggling to get this last bit of weight off I decided to get back to basics with my fitness. That means more walking and going to the gym. I keep meaning to go but find myself only going once a week. My work schedule for the next month or so is logging in 8-5 with my telecommute job, then I do stuff for my biz which includes blogging and getting my bookstore together. I will just have to get up early and hit the gym in the morning, starting tomorrow.

Today’s Goals:

50 crunches
Walk 12,000 steps
Drink 120 oz water
One serving meals, seconds declined
No salt added to food
Raw veggies for snacks, raw fruit for dessert
Brush & floss after every meal
Start: 210 pounds
Today’s weigh-in: 141 pounds
Goal: 130 pounds
