Bill Cosby & Alvin Poussaint Interview Excerpts on Courant.com
On The Cause Of The Problem
Cosby: It is a question people keep asking, which I keep saying, "I'm not even concerned with that. I'm talking about now." What I want to know is why we can't see clearly the horror of a young man blowing another young man's brains out.
On 'Airing Dirty Laundry'
Poussaint: There is too much concern in my opinion with "what will white people think?" Well, white people already think. So that "airing dirty laundry" excuse is a way of avoidance. If you are not going to face up to the problems, then you are perpetuating black people being in a state of victim hood and also treating them as if they can't change.
On The Book
Poussaint: Throughout the book, in all areas, we call on people not to be passive, that they have to be activists. They have to be activists in terms of their own health, parenting and preventing violence, and getting an education. We have to get over this feeling that so many, in our victim mentality, have of being hopeless and helpless. We are trying to show people a way that they can help themselves, and that it is possible.
