Understanding Communication In Your Culture
I have read a lot of good books about communication including body language and personality styles and shyness, all of which helped me to understand how to talk to people, in particular to American culture. There are things I have learned that still make little sense to me. For example in this culture most people don't like it if you stand too close to them. I did not know this and would often put people off right away just because I invaded their personal space. Once I learned this and watched how close I stood to people, there was a dramatic and sudden decrease in the number of people who avoided me. I could have gone on in life saying, Well I'll just find people who don't mind if I stand too close to them or whatever. Instead I chose to understand that most people in this culture find this off-putting and by just changing this one thing I was increasing the pool of people available to me to talk to and possible friendship.
