Do You Feel Like You Can't Afford to Make a Difference?
Would you like to grow your own food, support local businesses, and do more things that are eco-friendly and worker-friendly and healthy but just can't afford to? It doesn't have to be either/or. You can do those things and still, for example, shop at Costco. We buy gadgets there, for example my husband got me a juicer from Costco. It's the nifty Jack LaLane one for less than the TV price. With this juicer we have fresh vegetable and fruit juice on a regular basis (fresh juice is better for you than canned or bottled), usually made from veggies I grew, apples off our tree, and/or really ripe fruit we got for very low cost at the market. Because we eat so healthy I no longer buy vitamins, so that's another savings. Overall I would say that in the 18 months I've had this juicer it's paid for itself and saved me hundreds of dollars.
We are a family of 5 and feeding us all frugally and healthily can be a challenge. We don't beat ourselves up about it and neither should you. Just do what you can do for now and aim for making tiny changes in your overall lifestyle. Maybe you can't have a garden now, but maybe you could save a few dollars by growing a few herbs in your kitchen. Maybe you can't buy all organic food, but maybe you can fit a few items in your budget. One thing I won't budge on is organic eggs because of all the crap they put in the chickens. Maybe you won't want to budge on organic peanut butter or whatever. That's fine, it's your call. Maybe you can't support all your local businesses, but maybe you can lower your household's energy use. Maybe you can't make your household's clothing from scratch, but maybe you can make a few potholders for your kitchen rather than buying them from Wal-mart.
Little by little you will find that you can make small changes here and there that add up to quite a lot. Your little bit helps your household and everyone else on the planet. You also show your children that they can take responsibility for how they choose to live as adults and make a difference in this world.
