yes, that's been my experience, also. Last year I had volunteer winter squash and a few other goodies that grew from the compost.
Those squash seeds are hardy!
i just tranplanted what i think are squash and tomato plants that were growing in my compost. i wonder whether they'll survive the transplant or if they would be happy to remain where they were. i put them in soil, but i dunno. any thoughts?
