Haircut & Hairdye

Scott and Todd had haircuts last week. We've been discussing cutting their locks for awhile now. The last hair cut they had I shaved the back and sides, leaving the front and top of their head in locks. This was towards the end of last summer, and as their hair grew I just trimmed their locks. Since then both Scott and Todd have been asking off and on to have their entire head shaved, but would change their mind when I got out the clippers.

As much as I love the dreadlocks hairstyle, we don't wear locks for religious reasons...I've always felt that I would never force my kids to wear dreadlocks. Still, I felt sad that my boys wanted to be bare-headed. I kept reminding myself that Iyende was the same age Scott is now when she asked for her first set of locks to be cut.

I cut Todd's hair first. We were watching a movie, and I looked over at him and realized that his hair needed washing and twisting. I started to tell him so and that I'd get started after the movie, but what came out was, "Todd, do you want your hair cut now?" He said, "Ok." I went and got a pair of scissors and while I was cutting his hair, he would glance in the mirror now and then but mostly watched the movie. He seemd kind of bored and not very interested in the growing pile of locks beside him.

When the last lock was gone, he jumped up and ran to the mirror, and burst into tears. I was so shocked that he was so upset! He screamed, "Why did you do this to me?! I want my dreads back!" like he had no idea I was cutting his hair or something. He was truly pissed, and got even more upset when I refused to 'glue' his locks back on per his suggestion. He went and got one of his blankets and put it over his head and refused to take it off.

Then I cut Scott's hair. While I was cutting his hair Todd was saying stuff to him like, "You'll regret it! Don't do it! Think about it, Scott!" all of which cracked Scott up to no end. It was very funny. After Scott's hair was cut, he checked it out and proclaimed how much he liked it. So of course then Todd decided he liked his new haircut, too, and took the blanket off of his head.

Since then both boys have asked me to re-dread their hair. I probably will, but right now their hair is too short to start twisting it up without pulling strongly at the roots. I'd like for them to grow their hair out to about 2 inches before dreading it back up again, maybe keep it in cornrows.

Iyende's hair is getting longer and longer. Her locks kinda curve naturally where they bump her shoulders. I dyed them again, another red color. Her hair is now a brownish-red color. It's not the fire-engine, clown red that she wanted, but my nerves couldn't take that kind of red on my child's head right now. I told her she would have to wait until she was older. The front of her hair is not dreaded, like mine, and she wears this part in twists. She was at a friend's house when I cut the boys' hair, but when she came home I asked her if she wanted a hair cut or a change, and she said no. However, lately she has been talking about different hairstyles, all natural, of course, so she may be thinking about a change.
