What To Expect
I wrote this on a message board at another site. If you are expecting a kid or plan to have any children in the future, here's a little of what to expect.
Parenting is hard. It is also fun. There is nothing funnier than your own little kid cracking a joke in that high little goblin voice small kids have. There is a lot of singing and jumping about and telling stories and playing with toys. I find this part of parenting very fun.
It is also disconcerting. All 3 of my kids have my eyes. The color, the shape, the left eye being a little off center. It's the weirdest thing sometimes seeing yourself in another person, or their other parent in a smile or facial expression. Or seeing your parents and other relatives in your kids. Having kids definitely made me bond closer to my family, to understand the importance of family ties.
The thing that gets me the most is that rock star feeling that comes with having kids. You walk in the door, and they literally stand up and cheer and rush to you like you are a superstar or something and jump all over you with hugs and kisses. They absolutely adore everything about you. I truly feel, I could win a million dollars or the nobel prize or whatever and it would't feel as good or make me as happy, it wouldn't even come close, as having my children love me. Even my teenager is like this. She doesn't mob me the way my younger kids do anymore but she always looks happy to see me and talk to me. And unlike most kids her age with their parents, she actually likes hanging out with me.
I would say enjoy your privacy. Enjoy alone time with your spouse now. Your relationship with her will change. (For the better, but having a kid together can be hard on couples who haven't prepared) Read up on parenting. There is some nastiness with parenting, I can vaguely remember a time when I got grossed out by spit and vomit and blood and poop. You will become very acquainted with these body fluids/solids after having kids.
Parenting can hurt. The worst feeling in the world is worrying about your kids. You will hurt when they hurt. The first time some other little kid is mean to your kid, you will be astonished at how enraged you feel. And if your child gets seriously hurt, like breaks a bone or cuts a nasty cut, your heart will break into a million pieces.
Parenting is invasive. Your kid will follow you around, sit outside the bathroom (unless you're on of those parents who let them in) pull books, papers, magazines out of your hands, pester you while you're on the phone or computer, go through your things, etc. Plan your life into Things To Do While Kids Are Asleep and Kids Are Awake categories, heh heh.
Parenting is powerful. Teaching my kids to read was a great feeling, as is teaching them anything. You are shaping and molding another person's mind. It is an awesome responsibility. They always have questions, always... Parenting makes you smarter, because you're always taking them places like the library, museums, etc, to expose them to stuff for their minds and for information for questions you don't know the answer to. You'll also learn new stuff. Parenting makes you grow as a person.
